Purpose: Assignment #2

I think that beauty can often tie into the world in a negative way. While the definition of any type of beauty is not negative the pressures that are put on people to be beautiful end up making people associate beauty with struggle, pain or inadiquicy. People who fit the common definition of beautiful tend to appeal more to people, and have more sucsess in their careers. This makes the pressure to be beautiful even more extreme. I think that this pressure can result in vanity and a lack of individualism. Beacuse beauty plays such a big role in how people act, dress and express themselves almost every piece of visual information I see contains an aspect of beauty. There are tons of make up commercials on TV, photographers tend to use beautiful models, and actors and actresses are usually very good looking. Beauty is used as a tool in advertizing because it appeals to us. I think that the visual information we see about beauty often sets the standards for beauty and once again associates negative feelings or actions with beauty. I think when individuals, like myself or my friends, subconciously take all of this in it results in self critisism and takes a toll on individuality. I know one of the first things that I do is subconciously judge myself in the morning as I figure out what I'm going to wear that day. I think the thing that all the pressure to be beautiful really takes away is individuality and uniqueness. I think many people are scared to do things or wear things that they like because they do not see others doing the same. I chose this topic so that I could consider the idea of what is beautiful and how does this idea of beauty affect individuals. I also wanted to consider what I think is beautiful. Two big questions: What is beauty's affect on society? What is beauty? Vanity, Dark Side of Beauty, Judgement vs. Individuality .
